“In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few.” ~Shunryu Suzuki, Roshi

“Spatial Dynamics gives the student the experience of the healthy, harmonious continuum between the body and surrounding space.” ~ Jaimen McMillan

“A reflex is an involuntary response to a stimulus and the entire physiological process activating it. When a cluster of aberrant reflexes are present, neuro-developmental delay is said to exist.” ~ Sally Goddard

Programs

Sunroom Class

We begin each day with movement, singing, and poetry. Main lesson includes a rotation of traditional subjects in History, Geography, Biography, Science, and Language Arts. Main lesson blocks are presented experientially, integrating movement, crafts, drama, and art. Throughout the year practical skills are developed and taught through cooking, baking, gardening, woodworking, weaving, pottery, sewing, felting, and carpentry and are fully integrated with academic work. Movement education, and spatial dynamics are a fundamental element of each day. We end each day with a quiet therapeutic lesson in painting, yoga, or massage.

A student is invited into this class based on development and desire for a Waldorf inspired, movement and craft based education. Each student becomes a significant member of a dynamic learning process that nourishes and strengthens capacities through daily and weekly rhythms. Students may be moving and progressing at different paces. We mix and match our curriculum materials accordingly and meet each student where they are. Our whole child approach contains several key elements: to fill in missed opportunities; recognize strengths; build bridges; develop capacities; support the student's movement in space and inward awareness of the movement.

  • Class size is limited, based on student need.
  • Now accepting applications for part-time home schooling students, 2011/2012 school year.

Please call us to set up a visit, interview, and to request an application. Additional details will be covered throughout our interview process.

Enrichment Programs

Get A Move-On Learning

This is a full body, hands-on; learn by doing approach to arithmetic that includes movement, games, and art. This “learn as you move” approach supports students to grasp abstract concepts in their body to their brain. We include a wide range of experiential activities that are fun and practical and effectively ensure math success for most learners. We’ve watched children transform from hating math to confidently and eagerly leading activities and asking for more.

This can be a personalized individual one-on-one program yet we find greater enjoyment and acceleration in a small group dynamic.

“The crucial experience of numbers, as well as basic math concepts, rests on an inner certainty of our senses of movement and balance. Therefore we will try to combine numbers with various kinds of movement. Always keeping in mind the two poles of activity: physically “moving” the numbers and inwardly becoming aware of the movement.”  ~ Ernst Shuberth

Friday Night Teen Dinner Club

This club is for teenagers or soon to be teenagers. Cooking is a regular part of the sunroom class schedule. Our students create a menu according to the Geography, Culture, Biography or a part of History that we are studying in main lesson. Once a month our students invite family members, community members, volunteers or donors to a Friday night dinner. They create the environment, table setting, meal,  and special effects, and serve, and entertain our guests. In preparation for this fun event, our students attend additional practice periods.

Please contact us via email: flowingriverus@gmail.com to be placed on our Friday Night Teen Dinner Club email list.

Class size is limited.

Summer 2011

Rhythm and Moves Summer Camp

We utilize a multi-disciplinary approach based on the premise: if it is not fun, it is not functional; if it is rhythmical, it will be learned and integrated. Each child becomes a significant member of a dynamic group process that nourishes and strengthens capacities through a daily rhythm and movement. By repeating tasks and integrating intentional movement with music, poetry, art, dance, crafts, clay, games, and sports, learning takes place. Children move to learn, and learn to move,in desired ways that empower them to want to move and learn more. This integrates the base senses and creates a solid foundation for academic growth.

We play a host of non-competitive games, and offer a variety of challenge by choice activities. When children play together and not against each other, everyone has fun regardless of ability or skill. We provide a supportive forum to demystify society’s confusing and often contradictory messages delivered to our youth from the multimedia. Through non-competitive and cooperative games, skills for problem solving, moving past obstacles and becoming strong in body, heart, and soul are accomplished. New social roles are achieved.

This summer program is geared toward children with learning challenges and developmental delays that interfere with academic, artistic, social, and physical development.  We will help them to grow through games, sports, and classroom activities.

Our summer program is suitable for any child that wants to move, play, make new friends and have fun in a warm and nourishing environment.

Parent Education

We offer parent education once per season. Attendances at these meetings are required for parents of our students. These meeting are experiential in nature and usually happen on a school night. Our teachers, a specialty teacher, a therapist, Doctor or other professional from our community informs us about their craft, art of teaching, or healing modality. This is an opportunity for parents to experience first hand what it is like to be in the classroom, to learn more about what we do, why we do it, and to support student's in their home. This is also a time for us to learn more about parents and how we can partner together in giving our students the best opportunity to realize his or her learning and life potential.

Service Days: Several times throughout the year we invite parents and friends in the community to help us improve our environment. We welcome your participation. This work is an acceptable program for high school community service.
