Throughout 2011 to 2012 school our students will host a monthly Friday night dinner club. As a supporter you will be invited to one of these dinners. At this dinner you will have the opportunity to see, hear, feel, touch and taste our students work. This is magical event and not to be missed.
Abigayle –Abby” was born at 26 weeks, weighing only 1 lb., 2 oz. She had a very stressful birth with multiple complications, including eight surgeries while she was smaller than a hand. She left the hospital at four months old weighing 3.5 pounds with a weak prognosis. It was said she would never eat like a normal child or see. This is far from the truth. Abby’s eager determination has allowed her to make great strides. At age six, neurological movement based therapy and hyperbaric oxygen assisted Abby to step out of her wheelchair and to walk independently. She began to see and speak with increased clarity. Abby is a very intelligent student who still struggles with reading, writing, math, and smooth balanced movement. She was a student at The Village School, and all of our conductive education summer programs. This year she will be a full time student in the sunroom class. Abby is seeking a scholarship to continue with movement based healing education.
Karmel – Karmel suffered a brain injury at 6 months of age and was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy. The weakness on her left side impacts movement and speech. She is currently involved in therapeutic horseback riding and gymnastic classes. She completed a six-week Conductive Education program at Flowing River School during summer, 2008. Through this program, she was able to control her left limbs better and was able to use a knife and a fork for the first time. She also learned to walk with both feet flat instead of on her toes. Karmel lives with her grandmother and needs your support to join our summer program.
Elizabeth –“Libby” is Abby’s twin and was born weighing 1 lb., 4 oz. Libby suffered extreme birth trauma receiving CPR for four hours, ending up in a semi-coma for the first six months of life. In her early years neurological damage left her myelin sheath underdeveloped. She had uncontrollable seizures, acid reflux, colic and little weight gain. At age four she had a G-tube surgically inserted to help gain weight. She has made ongoing progress without medications and participating in a variety of Wholistic therapies including neurological acupuncture, hyperbaric oxygen, cranial-sacral therapy, curative care and a special diet. Libby has participated in all of our part-time programs. Therapeutic sage baths, yoga and CE improved the mobility of her tendons, joints, and muscles, reducing contractures. Our dynamic and inclusive social structure supports her to sit at a table, hold her head up, and respond with the beginning phase of language development. Libby would benefit from our vision to have a residential component with Wholistic care.

“I attended a HANDLE presentation. I learned how the functioning of the eyes influences behavior, learning and the ability to socialize and attend; that the relationship between the two sides to the brain effects ease of learning and emotional states; that how one uses her body effects the organization of the brain. I learned about the plasticity of the brain and its amazing capabilities of renewal and reparation.”
